A short, be-'stached and bespectacled man in a top hat and a red coat, the easygoing and jolly Thomas isn't at all the buffoon he might come across as to a stranger - he's been the town mayor for years now for many reasons (that aren't all related to a lack of competition). Not only is his first interest the condition of the Cape and the contentment and happiness of its residents, he has the enthusiasm and shocking amount of craft to satisfy it.
Though Thomas sets out first and foremost to be a good mayor, he's a lax and laid-back fellow who takes his time on his morning walk from home to work and tends to leave Town Hall early to mingle with his neighbors. They don't mind - they find it nice to have him about town, and they can always count on him never being further than the Square than visiting at the Fishery.
Rusty-haired and stern-faced Jonah is brave, graceful, vigilant, and a bit distant. He's not necessarily an easy man to find - every day, he's all over the Cape, as far as the beaches and end of the road to Mt. Throne in case of monster activity. To anyone who can catch him, however, it's his honor to lend whatever he can, whether advice and directions or his expertise as the town's only practiced fighter.
The young red-clad town mailwoman is sprightly and outgoing, and she loves her job and knows it well. She starts her deliveries first thing in the morning, as she lives downstairs from the post office in the Town Hall, and finishes almost without fail within a couple of hours, giving her plenty of time to tidy up her workplace and spend the rest of the day at play - lunching at the inn, taking a stroll through the meadow, and perhaps doing a second run just for any packages that may come in in the middle of the day and weigh her down if she saves them for her morning route.
Old Saibara is well-respected by the rest of the village, and is himself, in a word, intense. He's intense in his manner and intense in his focus on his work, and shows a flat disdain for anyone who disturbs or seems to lack all deserved respect for the process. On the other hand, the smith gives himself license to enjoy and relax into simple things like a few glasses of wine after work for his dedication and known skill, and in his spare time, is quite friendly toward anyone who he hasn't deemed a disgrace.
Although his strength's still not fading, Saibara has been seeking out an apprentice for years now - but his high standards and the static population and limited travel to the Cape have so far kept success out of sight.
Gotz is similar to a bear. This is in his looks - big, sturdy, and covered with bristling, grizzled brown hair - and in his gruff and solitary nature. A person who tries to approach him in spite of his demeanor shouldn't find themselves regretting it, as Gotz is in fact a laid-back, casual, and amicable old fellow, his preference for a certain amount of space aside. He is, however, prone to moodiness and expressing himself bluntly, even if he is never truly hostile.
This pair of carpenters have little in common but a still-strong childhood friendship, gratification in impressing others, and apprenticeship under Gotz. Where Bo is gentle and mild-mannered, Lorenzo is outgoing and proud. Bo enjoys patching things up and detailed work of the kind that can be done in the workshop, while Lorenzo enjoys the adventure of heading into the woods for lumber and thee undertaking of a full-on building project. This is all for better and not for worse - the two have always had a strong awareness of each others' differences and been grateful for it, and the idea of rivalry in their shared career path of carpentry would be to them unthinkable.
The town innkeeper is a sensitive, thoughtful, and hospitable soul who is honored to host and nurture others as best he can - he is a talented enough cook and makes good enough use of previous years spent living on a vineyard to do that through food and drink. Despite having a bit of a shy personality and proneness to the blues, along with investment in the neighbors he knows so well, he has a well-intentioned interest in others' so-to-speak stories and welcomes getting to know new people, and will consider a night of deep philosophical discussion and swapping stories and reflections - preferably all with a positive, hopeful slant - to be one well-spent.
He also has a pointed love of animals that he shares with his friend Grey - two tame falcons live with him on the inn's topmost floor, and his two chickens and goat Aja, who live in the small fenced-off orchard behind the building, almost seem to be giving him thank-yous with the daily eggs and bottles of milk that he often uses to cook for guests.
Dr. Trent is a workaholic. Oh, he keeps the town clinic open for a relatively normal number of drop-in hours, but he is quietly fussy and proud in regards to his very important position in the community, and he lives and breathes his profession even in his spare time - the conversations he pours the most real enthusiasm into are ones that allow him to talk science and health; he can rarely eat a meal or drink his tea without mentally turning the experience into a part of some nutritional experiment; and he spends nearly all of his usual evening at home reading up on anything he may be able to put into use at work. This includes magic - he is one of the few people on the Cape to have it among his bigger interests, and he dabbles in it to create potions that may be appropriate for sale in the clinic.
While he's not cold, Trent's intellectualism and focus climb onto and push down interest in developing reliable social grace, but as the doctor knows the other people in town like him well enough, it doesn't disturb him. If he regrets anything about his stilted social skills, it's there is one area in doctoring in which Trent falls short, it's bedside manner.
Young miscellaneous-items-seller Louis is the quintessential absent-minded inventing genius, with a soft and halting voice, an always-running brain, a bashful attitude, and the zest for craft and creativity of a small child given the materials and instructions to make their first collage. As he considers collecting and making items his job over selling them, he is liable to get quite wrapped up in his projects, and it's not a thing to be surprised about if you enter All and Nothing to find nobody behind the counter and mechanical noise screaming from the back room. But don't worry about that - he'll come scurrying out if you call him when it dies down.
Louis is resourceful as he is a conservationist - if a project doesn't go according to plan, he'll simply separate it into parts that seem as if they could come in handy in a later one and set them aside. As a consequence, his workshop is always "charmingly" cluttered.
A fair lady with long, pointed ears and a straight posture. For a creative and versatile artist who deals in beautiful things, Elena is stern and strict as they come, and is seldom seen to crack a smile, let alone a joke. True, she takes most everything seriously, from herself to hatting, and has a rigid and perfectionistic sense of propriety, business, and even style - but one would imagine that she relies on her craft, often surprisingly whimsical given her attitude, as a means to let herself breathe a little.
Sweet, grounded, and studious Mary is known off of the Cape as the author of a romantic novel by one alias and the writer of a series of fantasy books aimed at children by another. On the Cape, she's known and loved as their librarian and source of knowledge from tidbits such as the unique aspects of forest creatures' diets to the history of the Cape. She has a great love of assisting and supporting others by sharing or guiding them to knowledge, and is tickled pink whenever someone can go straight to her for something they're hoping to learn - she has read most of the books in the library, and she can ease you into starting a study of most any topic.
Known for being charismatic, ladylike, sunny, classily flirtatious, and delicate - her health has been frail ever since she was a little girl - of course Miss Lilia would have an affinity for flowers. Being around growing things seems to instill her with a bit of a glow, cheer and vivacity. Lilia's moods even seem to be a bit pointedly affected by the weather - she's at her most relaxed and low-key on rainy days; the Cape's cloudier and foggier days make her uneasy and suspicious; when the sun is at it's strongest, you may catch her singing out loud while she arranges flowers in her shop. Her genial and open demeanor, however, never wilts.
Grey spends much more time around animals than he does around people. He speaks tersely and frankly, and being put on the spot when others are present honestly makes him a bit anxious - consequently, he tends to shy away from making new acquaintances and unconsciously may try to push way a person with whom he doesn't feel obvious connection or shared interest. But all it takes to slip the curtain off of his care for other living things - people too - and steadfastness is a bit of honesty.
He stays at the Aerie Inn whenever he is in town, where he checks up on the animals of his best friend Cliff.
Ginger-haired, bright-blue-eyed Wes is a fun-loving but an unstructured and lackadaisical one with a total air of contentment - as far as he's concerned, he is given money for a living just for riding boats, catching fish, swimming, and lounging around his workplace all day. For his laziness, Wes is strong and energetic, and though he seems initially simple-minded and slow-witted, he shows clear sharpness where fish and fishing are concerned.
Aristocratic Town Benefactors The de Sainte-Coquille Family
The de Sainte-Coquille family are, in one word, notorious - for their clan size and distribution, to begin with, with any thriving nature-bound town a traveler might visit carrying a good chance of being the site of a de Sainte-Coquille manor (the high-standards de Sainte-Coquilles often insist that the food's best in provincial towns). Also for their fantastic wealth, along with the fact that no one alive seems quite sure where it originally came from. It's obviously no source of uncertainty for them, as the de Sainte-Coquilles are also known for their thriftiness and lack of hesitance to indulge a love of luxury.
This particular branch of the de Sainte-Coquilles own the park in the southern part of town, with their manor fenced off and nestled in flowering trees in the corner.
Bridgette is the widowed head of the Bower Village de Sainte-Coquille household, a portly, pompous, and critical older woman. Despite her coming across outwardly as condescending and gluttonous, not helped there by the fact that her favorite conversational topic is food, she's surprisingly generous and community-minded, and thinks of the cape and its town as more things of beauty that everyone ought to be able to enjoy; she is a friend of Mayor Thomas and often has great involvement in planning and preparing local festivals, and more than one business in town has benefited from a loan courtesy of Bridgette.
Michell, Lorraine, and Pierre are Bridgette's children in order from oldest to youngest. Michell, the eldest son, is the picture of a gentleman and a prince - or so Bridgette and her late husband intended him to be. He is almost painfully proper, moralistic, and chivalrous - ladies, please don't mistake him for patronizing! - on one hand, but on the other, takes his grooming for a philanthropic mindset to heart. Lorraine, mommy's little girl, is the most bold of the three de Sainte-Coquille children, and seemingly arrogant, full of a sense of pride and power, and has an ambitious and competitive spirit. Pierre, the youngest, is the most outright friendly, sociable, and frivolous of his siblings. Pierre has his mother's passion for food, although unlike her he hasn't let it ruin his figure, and has studied the culinary arts out of town. He enjoys assisting Tabitha in cooking meals for family, guests, and the occasional festivals, but he is most known in town for selling recipes and judging for the cooking contest at the annual Harvest Festival.
Maidservant of the Bower Village de Sainte-Coquille Family Tabitha
The pointy-eared, smiling, tranquil Tabitha catches the memory and often admiration of visitors of the Bower Village de Sainte-Coquilles, for her patience, thoroughness, and commitment to her duties as a servant and for a quality that could be called maternal. It's fitting, as she's significantly older than she looks: Tabitha and Bridgette grew up side by side, and Tabitha's loyalty to the de Sainte-Coquilles is that of a family member - which Bridgette and her children consider her.
The upbeat but enigmatic Yue, as a merchant, seeks to constantly inspire. What better way to ensure that she thrills her customers, keeps their interest in her wares, and can make as much of a profit as she likes by selling the most unique items as possible? In a way, she's practical. In another way, she's at times overambitious - she spends so much time determining and searching for the best prospective hits for the towns and cities that are on her maps that she may be more often hunting and making business arrangements than actually selling. Her stops to trade her goods are infrequent and inconsistent, although Bower Village is lucky to be her most regular visit, able to expect her for a few days within each month.
Everyone knows the Witch Princess. That is, they know that she lives on Cape Beryl. It's also known - or at least said - that she is centuries old and has a long-standing perceived rivalry with the Harvest Goddess, and that, as her name suggests, she is one of the most magic-wise people alive. No one, however, can tell anyone else where she is, or how she is. She only shows her face once in a blue moon and never to more people than she needs to, when she wants something - perhaps an object needed for a spell or potion, some unwitting help in stirring up mischief to catch the Goddess's attention... or just a few baskets of the wild blackberries she has a powerful fondness for.
Can-do, reliable, and brotherly strongman Zeke goes to sleep early, leaves Bower Village in the dead of night for the next village to ship its craftspeople's goods for sale and pick up orders, and comes home in the afternoon to happy greetings and often tips, occasional gifts. He keeps busy and his neighbors love him as much as he loves them - it's a fantastic and satisfying life. It's not one, mind you, that he allows to go to his head. Zeke wouldn't dare think of himself as the pin holding the village together, but he never seems to lose the drive to put a load of heart into working for them - if the chummy shipping man is any one and only one thing, it's hearty.
